What About Capsule Endoscopy?
Capsule endoscopy serves another purpose. The patient swallows a small capsule containing a camera that captures images as it travels through the digestive tract.
It can be particularly useful for evaluating areas of the small intestine that conventional upper endoscopy and colonoscopy cannot fully visualize.
However, capsule endoscopy does not replace every conventional endoscopic procedure. The correct investigation depends on the clinical question.

Modern endoscopy is not limited to viewing the digestive tract.
Depending on the procedure and findings, an endoscopist may perform a biopsy, remove certain polyps or carry out other therapeutic interventions.
